Understanding industrial relations

You need to develop your IR skills and are seeking a program that provides a simple explanation of the current environment including ALP reforms to assist you to manage industrial relations issues that arise in your workplace.


Program overview

Increasingly, the tasks of industrial relations specialists – dealing with staff grievances, negotiating and interpreting industrial instruments and managing union relationships – are becoming part of the day-to-day responsibilities for line managers and HR practitioners.

However with the constantly changing industrial relations environment and the deluge of public information it can sometimes feel like you are tiptoeing through a minefield. This program will provide a simple explanation of the current Australian industrial relations framework, including ALP reforms, and give you the tools to proactively manage your workforce irrespective of your unique industrial relations landscape.

This program aims to provide you with a greater understanding of the dynamics of industrial relations, as well as the greater confidence to manage industrial relations issues in your workplace.

Learning outcomes

  • understanding the Australian IR framework including ALP reforms
  • awareness of the role of regulatory bodies in the current environment
  • differentiating between the types of workplace agreements and the ongoing role of awards
  • knowing the relationship between contracts, policies and industrial instruments
  • understanding the roles of the key players in dispute resolution and how to best manage their different agendas
  • insight into the bargaining regime and how agreements are made
  • understanding the preconditions to lawful industrial action and employer responses including exceptions for safety issues
  • an understanding of industrial action (lawful and unlawful), and
  • managing union rights of entry.
