A director of IKD, Benny designs and delivers both legal and executive learning programs for senior business managers and lawyers. His professional experience encompasses working as a lawyer, academic and consultant in Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore. He blends extensive legal expertise in professional legal practice across several jurisdictions with a passion for learning and development.

Within IKD, Benny specialises in designing and facilitating in the areas of legal learning and executive learning. His legal learning programs encompass topics such as compliance, corporate governance, and ethics. He also delivers highly interactive executive learning programs for corporate counsel and lawyers in private practice on topics such as workload management, mentoring, creativity and innovation, and professional ethics. He brings a valuable and unique mix of law and management to his role in IKD through his personal knowledge and practice in both these areas.

Previously a lawyer with Minter Ellison in Melbourne and an award-winning associate professor at the Nanyang Business School in Singapore, Benny has authored or co-authored several law books including the popular text, Singapore Business Law (5th edition, 2009). His legal management articles have appeared in Lawyers Weekly and the ACLA Journal. In 2008, LexisNexis Butterworths Australia released a book which he edited, Leadership and Management Challenges of In-house Legal Counsel.

Recent projects Benny has undertaken for IKD include:

  • Facilitation of the Legal Council Executive Development Program (LCEDP) – a residential executive education program for senior in-house legal counsel.
  • Design and delivery of the Lawyers’ Management Program – a residential program for lawyers to help them improve their management skill.
  • Project managing a major Training Needs Analysis for a Victorian government authority with over 400 fulltime staff.
  • Design and coordination of a special research project on corporate counsel, and writing of journal articles based on that research.
  • Directing a strategic review of the compliance learning function of the Australian subsidiary of an international pharmaceutical company.
  • Conception, design and successful launch of IKD LegalScores - which measures the performance of in-house legal teams.

Benny has undergraduate degrees in law and economics from Monash University as well as a Master of Laws and PhD from the University of Melbourne. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor to the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia in 1985. Reflecting his interest in law and management, since 2003 Benny has been an adjunct faculty at the Melbourne Law School and Melbourne Business School in the University of Melbourne, teaching in their highly-rated LLM and MBA programs.
